Are they doing their job?

How do you know if a security guard is doing their job? Hopefully, you’ve seen our other blog posts and created a job description as a way to keep tabs on your hired guard. If not, don’t worry. You can still be sure that security guards are doing their jobs by becoming familiar with typical security guard job responsibilities. The number one job of a security guard it to keep people and items safe. How, exactly, do they do this? Be on the lookout for these types of activities. If you see them doing these things, rest assured that they are doing their job.

Apprehending Criminals.

Security guards, in some instances, are allowed to make a citizens arrest and hold a criminal while the authorities arrive. Or, if a guard finds out that someone is causing damage to a property, they can report problems to the police. Guards are always on the lookout for criminal behavior, so it is in their nature to be prepared to apprehend criminals.

Patrolling the Premises.

Security guards should rarely be stationary. Rather, you want to be sure that your guard is moving around and examining a premises. Security guards should have a specific area that is their responsibility. This area should be thoroughly observed for foul play or any other suspicious activity.

Acting in an Emergency.

Perhaps the main reason why security guards are hired is to have peace of mind in a crisis or emergency. If this happens, a security guard is responsible for responding to this situation. This can mean anything from directly handling a threat, to swiftly calling authorities for assistance. Hopefully this is something that you will not need to encounter first hand. But if you do, know that a security guard is definitely doing their job when they act quickly during an emergency.

Monitoring an entrance.

This one can be tricky. There are many guards who are responsible for monitoring an entrance to a building to ensure safety. However, so many times the guard becomes familiar with regulars that security can be breached. You want to be sure that guards monitor EVERYONE who enters a building if that is your protocol. Even if you see the same guard every single day, be prepared to show your ID. Yes, it can take an extra minute from your day, but these protocols are important. Being consistent is the best way to ensure safety and reduce the risk of criminal behavior.

Record activities.

Finally, security guards should keep a record of any events that seem unusual or suspicious. A written record of these events can help find a pattern of illegal behavior. It also is beneficial if there are multiple guards working in shifts. This helps to keep guards informed about what happens when they are not working.

These security guard job responsibilities are certainly not all inclusive as there are many other things that guards can do. But, these general job responsibilities are a good starting point to see if your guard is doing what they should be.
